In 2008 Myndert Pon, the founder of Bodegas Salentein, visited the Pedernal Valley in San Juan and was inspired by the tremendous beauty, untamed nature and diverse terroir. This inspiration, and his vision to showcase the superlative fruit grown in the Pedernal Valley, led to the creation of Pyros Wines, the first world-class wines
collection reflecting the unique terroir of the Pedernal Valley.
PYROS is an outstanding collection of unusual and exclusive wines from Argentina. All the grapes for these wines come from the exclusive Pedernal Valley, a deep and isolated canyon located in the amazing foothills of the Andes Mountains in the province of San Juan.
Jose Ruben Morales, born and raised in Mendoza is 40 years old and has only one passion in his life: Wine. He studied at the Don Bosco Oenology School of Universidad Juan Agustin where he obtained his degree in oenology. During his studies Morales started working at Quiros Winery for two years. After that he joined Pascual Toso S.A. Here he stayed for fourteen years and gained valuable experience in the art of making world class wines. This craftmanship, expierence and passion are now expressed in the wines of Pyros. Morales his Goal at Pyros is to continuously improve the wine quality and expression of the terrior ‘Valle de Pedernal’ with a special emphasis on the human factor.
Matocq grew up in San Juan, where his family worked in the vineyards. He graduate from the University of Buenos Aires in the School of Agronomy, where he earned a Master of Science degree in Viticulture and Enology at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure Agronomique de Montpellier, France. That work gave him an international perspective on the world of wine, and it is something he brings to his work every day at Pyros. He has been a vineyard consultant for 20 years and one of the most experienced vinyardmanager in Pedernal Valley before joing Pyros in 2011.
Matocq is the author of many articles on viticulture in leading technical publications throughout the world and he continues to be heavily involved in education, teaching as part of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, National University of Cuyo in Mendoza.
