If the 2012 release was highly impressive, this is even better. Combining Malbec with 22% Syrah and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon, it’s a seamless cuvée from a remarkable vineyard. Thyme, lavender, white pepper, cassis and blackcurrant notes are framed by chalky minerality and stylish oak. 2018-28.

Inky in colour, as the wines from this valley tend to be, the Special Blend is a cuvée of Malbec with 22% Syrah and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon. Ginger spice and blood orange aromas segue into a dense, ripe, well-balanced red with seamless oak and a mineral finish. Drink 2017-23.

It’s remarkable to think that this vineyard (Block 4) was only planted in 2008, such is its quality, density and sense of place. Rich, focused and sappy, with notes of liquorice and wild thyme, some chalky freshness and compact, almost Cornas-like tannins, it’s a very exciting Malbec. Drink 2017-22.

A red that shows wonderful depth and minerality with dark fruits and fine tannins. Full-bodied, yet refined and poised. Drink or hold. J.S.-

The Pedernal Valley may not be as famous as the Uco Valley, but it’s every bit as good for red grapes. This is an amazingly intense Malbec, showing flavours of wild thyme, cracked pepper, dense, dark berry fruit, fine tannins and a chalky freshness. 2018-26

The picturesque Pedernal Valley produces some of the most aromatic reds in Argentina and this wild-herb scented Malbec is true to type. Grippy, savoury and dense with violet, damson and dark plum flavours, it’s rich, spicy and built to last. 2018-24.

Pyros’ structured, stony, deeply coloured Malbec is further proof that the Pedernal Valley is a thrilling wine region. Aged in old oak to allow the fruit free rein, it’s wild and aromatic, with plush tannins, good grip, damson and blackberry fruit and a long, minerally finish. Great value, too. 2016-23 .

San Juan’s windy, high altitude Pedernal Valley is rapidly emerging as the best place to grow Syrah in Argentina. This meaty, savoury, tapenade and blackberry-like example is vibrant, structured and stony, with grippy but fine tannins. 2016-21.

Syrah seems to do better in the higher parts of San Juan than anywhere else in Argentina. Sourced from flint and limestone soils, it’s a New World take on a top St Joseph: smoky, brambly and meaty with tapenade and black pepper intensity. 2018-23.
